Electric Ladyland

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Electric Ladyland is the third and final studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and was released in October 1968 as a double album. It is the only album by the group on which Jimi Hendrix alone is credited as producer. Recording began in July 1967, took place at several locations and continued in April 1968 at the new Record Plant in New York. Hendrix demanded many takes, and guests streamed into the studio. Producer Chas Chandler quit the project out of frustration.

The result is broad and studio-driven: psychedelic pop, a long blues jam in Voodoo Chile, rhythm and blues, and his version of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, which even Dylan himself praised. Engineer Eddie Kramer experimented with reversed tape, echo and flanging. Critics did not quite know what to make of it at the time, but the album spent two weeks at number 1 in America and is now regarded as one of his finest works.
