Axis: Bold as Love

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Axis: Bold as Love was released in December 1967, only seven months after the successful debut Are You Experienced. The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded it at Olympic Studios in London, with Chas Chandler as producer and Eddie Kramer as sound engineer. Just before the end of recording Hendrix left the master of the first side in a taxi, after which the trio remixed the songs in a single night. Hendrix was afterwards not satisfied with that haste.

The album shows various musical styles, and critics saw in it Hendrix's growth as a songwriter. Spanish Castle Magic and Little Wing come from his past with rhythm-and-blues bands and stayed in his live repertoire throughout his career. On If 6 Was 9 he also plays recorder. The sleeve, with Hindu imagery, caused a stir, and Hendrix said publicly that he did not agree with it. The record was a critical and commercial success.

Listening tip. Listen to the guitar playing in Little Wing and to how soft and restrained the song sounds.
