Voodoo

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After his 1995 debut Brown Sugar, D'Angelo fell silent for almost five years. He suffered from writer's block, until the birth of his son in 1998 got him writing again. Voodoo was made in 1998 and 1999 at Electric Lady Studios in New York, together with drummer Questlove and other musicians around the Soulquarians collective. They watched old footage of Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix and then jammed for hours. That is how Africa came about, after they had spent an evening playing Prince.

The sound is looser and built more on groove than on his debut, with funk as its foundation and a lot of space between the notes. Untitled (How Does It Feel) became the best-known single. Voodoo was released in January 2000, went straight to the top of the American chart and won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Writers see the record as a high point of neo soul. Rolling Stone later placed it at number 28 of the best albums ever.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Africa and notice how the song keeps flowing as one long, loose groove, in no hurry to get anywhere.
