Dare
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dare · At the end of 1980 the original line-up of the Human League fell apart. Philip Oakey and Philip Adrian Wright remained, added two teenage dancers and were deep in debt. At Virgin's insistence Oakey went to work with producer Martin Rushent in his studio in Berkshire. Recording ran from March to September 1981. The songs grew out of a simple Linn LM-1 rhythm, every note carefully chosen. Each track took about a week. Guitarist Jo Callis was the last to join.
The album moved from avant-garde electronic work to a more pop-oriented sound. Singles such as The Sound of the Crowd, Love Action and Open Your Heart preceded Don't You Want Me, a duet between Oakey and Susanne Sulley. He thought it the weakest song and therefore put it right at the end. It became the band's biggest hit and the Christmas single of 1981. The Musicians' Union condemned the record. Dare reached number one in England and is regarded as genre-defining.
