Linn LM-1

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Linn LM-1 · In 1980, Roger Linn released the LM-1, the first drum machine with digital recordings of real drums instead of electronically imitated sounds. You programmed a pattern and the machine played it back tightly and endlessly, with a built-in option to give the rhythm a little swing. In 1982, the cheaper LinnDrum followed. The machines can be heard on countless hits of the 1980s, from The Human League and Michael Jackson to Prince, who often used the drums unusually tuned and processed.

Listening

Listening tip. Do the drums sound like a drummer or like a machine? Notice how identical every stroke is.
