Crash
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Crash was released on 8 September 1986 on Virgin Records. After the slow work on its predecessor Hysteria, the band could not get going again and sessions with producer Colin Thurston ground to a halt. Virgin proposed working with the American production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In February 1986 the group travelled to Minneapolis. The duo replayed the parts by hand, so that according to the sleeve notes there are no sequencers on the album.
Towards the end a quarrel arose over who was boss in the studio, and singer Philip Oakey pulled the band back to Sheffield. Jam and Lewis finished their four songs themselves. The title comes from a crash cymbal: it was once again a disco record with lots of cymbals. Human became the band's second American number one. Keyboardist Philip Adrian Wright left the group afterwards.
