Waiting for the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Waiting for the Sun was the third album by The Doors and was released in July 1968. The group had already used most of the material from Jim Morrison's notebook on the first two records and was struggling with what drummer John Densmore called third-album syndrome. The recording, mainly at TTG Studios in Los Angeles, went with difficulty. Morrison's drinking caused tension and producer Paul Rothchild demanded countless takes. The long piece Celebration of the Lizard, intended for the second side, was dropped. Only the section Not to Touch the Earth made the record.

Hello, I Love You became the group's second number one in the United States. The Unknown Soldier, a reaction to the way the Vietnam War was shown on television, uses march rhythms and gunshots. Spanish Caravan shows Robby Krieger's flamenco guitar playing. The album received mixed reactions because of its variety, but it spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and is now judged more mildly.

Listening tip. Listen to The Unknown Soldier and notice the middle of the song, where you hear military commands and gunshots before the vocals return.
