The Soft Parade

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Soft Parade was released in July 1969 and was the fourth album by The Doors. After a gruelling tour there was little new material. Producer Paul Rothchild proposed a completely different approach: a fuller sound with horns and strings, arranged by Paul Harris. Jim Morrison was meanwhile struggling with personal problems and wrote less. Guitarist Robby Krieger took on a large part of the songs. Recording ran from November 1968 to May 1969 and made it the group's most expensive album.

Touch Me, with a saxophone solo by Curtis Amy, became one of the group's biggest hits. The title song begins with a mock sermon by Morrison and blends funk, jazz and psychedelia. Many listeners from the underground saw the horns and strings as a step towards pop. The criticism was harsh, and the record is still regarded as the weakest album with Morrison.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Touch Me and notice the horns and strings, and the saxophone solo that appears later in the song.
