The Doors
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
The Doors · In the autumn of 1966 the group had been playing on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles for some time. The Whisky a Go Go fired the band on 21 August, after singer Jim Morrison had improvised a passage from Oedipus Rex during The End. Elektra Records had signed the group three days earlier. Producer Paul A. Rothchild and sound engineer Bruce Botnick recorded the debut in about a month at Sunset Sound in Hollywood. What you hear on the record is, according to Botnick, what the band did live.
The album combines jazz, blues, classical, pop and R&B on a rock foundation, with organ and guitar at the core. Light My Fire became the breakthrough, in the full version, and The End closes with the spoken, improvised Oedipus section. The record was a commercial and critical success. In 2015 the Library of Congress included it in the National Recording Registry.
