The Allman Brothers Band
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Allman Brothers Band · The debut came about in 1969, after guitarist Duane Allman had put together a band in Jacksonville with two guitarists and two drummers. His brother Gregg became the singer. In August the group recorded the album at Atlantic Studios in New York, under the direction of staff engineer Adrian Barber, because producer Tom Dowd was not available. Recording and mixing took two weeks. The band had already played the songs live for months, so they were firmly in place.
The sound mixes blues, jazz and country. Dreams shows the jazz influence, and Whipping Post became a crowd favourite. Trouble No More and Don't Want You No More are adaptations of existing songs. The album initially sold poorly, but Rolling Stone called it subtle, honest and moving. Later Dowd made a new mix, because the band did not like Barber's original mix.
