Eat a Peach

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After their breakthrough with the live album At Fillmore East, the Allman Brothers Band began work on a third studio album in 1971. On 29 October 1971 guitarist and bandleader Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon. Eat a Peach became his last album. It is a double album of studio recordings from Criteria Studios in Miami, with and without Duane, and live recordings from the Fillmore East, produced by Tom Dowd.

Mountain Jam lasts half an hour and fills two sides of the original double LP. Gregg Allman sings Melissa, his brother's favourite song, and Dickey Betts's Blue Sky became a staple of classic rock radio. The title comes from a remark by Duane Allman about a peach for peace. The album was an immediate success, reached number four on the American chart and went platinum.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Melissa and notice how Gregg Allman sings his brother's song: what does the voice do to the atmosphere?
