Midnights

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Taylor Swift announced Midnights at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. The album was released on 21 October, after folklore, evermore and her re-recordings of older albums. She called it a concept album about sleepless nights, with five themes: self-loathing, revenge fantasies, wondering what might have been, falling in love and falling apart. She made it with Jack Antonoff, in his studio Rough Customer in Brooklyn and at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan.

It sounds minimalist and electronic: analogue synthesizers, sparse drum machine rhythms and processed vocals. It is described as synth-pop, electropop and dream pop. On Midnight Rain and Labyrinth her voice is pitched down. Anti-Hero, about insecurity and fame, became a number 1 in the United States. The album topped the American chart with more than a million copies in its first week and won Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammys, a first for the same artist for the fourth time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Midnight Rain and notice the voice: it is pitched down and therefore sounds low, to critics almost masculine or androgynous.
