folklore · Taylor Swift had planned a tour for April 2020, but it was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. In quarantine she watched and read a lot of fiction. That led her to invented stories and characters instead of her usual autobiographical writing. She recorded her vocals in a home studio in Los Angeles and worked remotely with the producers Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, who exchanged digital files with her. The album was released as a surprise on 24 July 2020.
It sounds calm, with piano, strings, orchestration and restrained percussion, in styles such as indie folk and chamber pop. The songs cardigan, the 1 and exile with Bon Iver reached the top ten internationally, and cardigan became number 1 on the American Hot 100. It was the best-selling album of 2020 in the United States. Critics praised the emotional depth and the rich lyrics. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys, making her the first woman to win that prize three times.
