True Stories
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
This seventh Talking Heads album was released in September 1986, shortly before singer David Byrne's satirical musical film True Stories. The record contains only studio recordings by the band of songs from the film. A soundtrack album with the actors did not appear until 2018. Wild Wild Life became the biggest hit and won two MTV Video Music Awards in 1987 with its video. Love for Sale also got a video, made for the film.
The music is more melodic than on the records before it. One reviewer called it gently melodic pop with little of the band's aggressive polyrhythms of those years, although he found some songs banal. He called Love for Sale and People Like Us fine rock music. In Hey Now a school choir sings along, and People Like Us gets a violin and pedal steel. The English band Radiohead named themselves after the song Radio Head.
