Little Creatures

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Little Creatures is the sixth studio album by Talking Heads and was released in June 1985 on Sire Records. On this record the band looks at America itself: the lyrics are about American life, and the music takes elements from country music, with pedal steel guitar on many tracks. Eric Weissberg plays that guitar, on Creatures of Love and Walk It Down among others. Accordion, washboard and backing vocals also give the songs a playful, ordinary sound.

The critics of The Village Voice voted the record album of the year in the Pazz & Jop poll. It is the band's best-selling studio album, with more than two million copies sold in the United States. The cover was made by the outsider artist Howard Finster and was chosen by Rolling Stone as cover of the year.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the accordion and the washboard in Road to Nowhere, and notice how such a simple sound gives the song an old-fashioned, festive character.
