…Nothing Like the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

…Nothing Like the Sun · Nothing Like the Sun is Sting's second solo album and came out on 16 October 1987 on A&M. He recorded it between March and August 1987 at AIR Studios on Montserrat, with Bryan Loren and Neil Dorfsman as producers. Two events colour the record: the death of his mother in June 1987 and his participation in Amnesty International's Conspiracy of Hope Tour, where he met victims of oppression. From that came They Dance Alone, about Chilean women who dance the cueca alone with photographs of the disappeared on their clothes.

The title comes from Shakespeare's Sonnet 130, which appears in Sister Moon. Englishman in New York is a tribute to Quentin Crisp and sounds jazzy. The record received favourable reviews, won the Brit Award for best British album in 1988 and in 1989 stood at number 90 on Rolling Stone's list of the best albums of the 1980s.

Listening tip. Listen to Englishman in New York and notice how jazz influences give the pop song an elegant, relaxed colour.
