The Dream of the Blue Turtles
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Dream of the Blue Turtles is Sting's first solo album, released on 17 June 1985. The title comes from a dream of the singer himself. At first he worked with the producers of Torch Song on synthesizer-driven electrofunk, but in the end he did not choose that. In January 1985 he held auditions for jazz musicians in New York and brought in, among others, Omar Hakim, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and Darryl Jones. The band recorded for seven weeks at Blue Wave Studio in Barbados.
The record mixes pop and jazz. Russians is about the fear of nuclear weapons in the Cold War, We Work the Black Seam about the miners' strike of 1984 and 1985, and Moon Over Bourbon Street is inspired by a novel by Anne Rice. Critics were full of praise. The album received Grammy nominations, including for Album of the Year.
