The Soul Cages

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Soul Cages is Sting's third studio album and was released on 21 January 1991. It is a concept album about the death of his father Ernest Sumner. After that death in 1987, Sting developed a writer's block that lasted for years. He broke it by working through his father's death in music. Many songs are about sailing and the sea, and refer to Newcastle, where he grew up. He started from the image of an enormous ship above the house, next to the shipyard.

Because he had no finished songs, he worked them out in the studio with guitarist Dominic Miller, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland and drummer Manu Katché. The basic tracks took six weeks in Paris. The title song won the first Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1992.
