Ten Summoner’s Tales
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Ten Summoner’s Tales · Ten Summoner's Tales is Sting's fourth solo album and came out in 1993. After the heavy, introspective predecessor The Soul Cages, he wanted to write lighter music, songs that would amuse his band and family. They are about love and morality. He recorded the record in his own studio at Lake House in Wiltshire, with Hugh Padgham as co-producer. The title is a pun on his surname Sumner and the summoner from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.
The music plays with time signatures: Love Is Stronger Than Justice (The Munificent Seven) is written in 7/4, a nod to the films Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, and Seven Days in 5/4. If I Ever Lose My Faith in You and Fields of Gold were hits in the United States. The album was nominated for six Grammys and made the shortlist for the Mercury Prize.
