West Coast Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

West Coast Jazz is an album from 1955 by Stan Getz with a quartet that also includes trumpeter Conte Candoli. Getz recorded the record in California, where he was filming scenes for The Benny Goodman Story and played for a week at Zardi's Jazzland. He also chose the musicians who accompanied him there for the album. The producer was Norman Granz and David Stone Martin drew the cover.

The title is a joke, because Getz did not belong to the West Coast style. Al Campbell of AllMusic in fact heard strong group playing with energetic bop solos, especially in S-H-I-N-E and Dizzy Gillespie's A Night in Tunisia. Billboard called the record a smash in October 1955, one that swings powerfully. In 1996 the album was reissued on Verve with extra tracks.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Night in Tunisia for the fast interplay between the tenor saxophone and the rest of the group.
