Hamp and Getz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hamp and Getz is an album by vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, recorded in 1955 and released on the Norgran label. Producer Norman Granz brought together two parties who at first sight seemed ill-matched: the cool Getz and the extrovert Hampton. Pianist Lou Levy, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Shelly Manne make up the rhythm section.

The repertoire runs from Cherokee and a ballad medley to Count Basie's Jumpin' at the Woodside and Hampton's Gladys. Billboard wrote at the end of December 1955 that Hampton was the stronger of the two and that Getz, under his influence, played more roughly and with less inhibition than usual. AllMusic gave it four and a half stars and called it classic music by two outstanding players.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cherokee for the interplay of vibraphone and tenor saxophone, and notice how Getz sounds rougher than you are used to from him.
