The Brothers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Brothers is a compilation album by the saxophonists Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, which Prestige released in 1956. The four recordings of 8 April 1949 had already appeared on separate records, under the name Stan Getz Tenor Sax Stars. In 1956 Prestige put them together into an album for the first time and added four pieces by Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. Later the album was reissued many times, and on CD three alternate takes from the vaults were added.

Three tenor saxophonists play on the 1949 recordings: Getz, Allen Eager and Brew Moore. Sims and Cohn play on the later pieces. The music recalls the light Four Brothers sound that the tenor saxophonists had shown in Woody Herman's band in 1947. A reviewer at AllMusic called it a fine record that shows the cool, early West Coast bop of these soloists and of Miles Davis.
