Work Time

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Work Time dates from 1956 and was released on the Prestige label. Sonny Rollins plays tenor saxophone in a quartet with pianist Ray Bryant, bassist George Morrow and drummer Max Roach. The record contains five tracks: standards by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, the piece Raincheck by Billy Strayhorn and Paradox, an original composition by Rollins.

Opinions differ on its reception. Scott Yanow of AllMusic found it a pleasant, strong album that is not essential. The writer and musician Peter Niklas Wilson, by contrast, called it one of Rollins's most brilliant sessions and put it on a par with the recordings of Saxophone Colossus, which so many fans love.

Listening tip. Listen to There's No Business Like Show Business to hear how the tenor saxophone handles the familiar melody and how drummer Max Roach moves along underneath it.
