Life
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Life is the third studio album by Sly and the Family Stone and was released in September 1968 on Epic. In the United Kingdom it was called M'Lady. Unlike its predecessor Dance to the Music, it was not a commercial success, although the reviews have been mostly positive over the years. The album is a halfway point between the fiery A Whole New Thing and the more commercial Dance to the Music and uses few studio effects.
The music comes mainly from Sly Stone's compositions. The songs are about dating, about groupies and about phoneys, as in Plastic Jim, which refers to Eleanor Rigby. Fun, Harmony, Life and Love City revolve around unity and integration, themes that Stand! would later develop. Much of the material has been sampled: Greg Errico's drum solo in Love City, and the opening riff of Into My Own Thing in Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim.
