A Whole New Thing

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Whole New Thing · In 1967 the debut of Sly and the Family Stone was released, by Epic and CBS. The album was recorded live in the studio, without overdubs, and sounds less poppy than the later records. The lead vocals were shared by Sly Stone, Freddie Stone and Larry Graham. Sly wrote, arranged and produced all the songs himself.

The record received a mixed reception and made no commercial impression: it did not reach the charts. CBS label boss Clive Davis subsequently urged Sly to make a more commercial album. That became Dance to the Music. This made A Whole New Thing a kind of run-up: here the band is still raw and idiosyncratic, before the sound was smoothed out for a bigger audience.
