Stand!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stand! is the fourth album by Sly and the Family Stone and came out on 3 May 1969 on Epic Records, shortly before the Woodstock performance. Sly Stone wrote and produced it himself. It followed Life, which had not worked commercially: none of the first three albums had got above position 100 on the Billboard chart. A large part was recorded at Pacific High Recording Studios in San Francisco. Stephen Paley remembered how concentrated Sly was at the time.

The record contains Stand!, I Want to Take You Higher, Sing a Simple Song and Everyday People, already a number 1 when the album came out. In Everyday People, Larry Graham introduces the slap-pop bass. Sex Machine is a thirteen-minute jam in which every band member gets a solo. The album reached number 13 and became one of the most successful of the 1960s. It mixes rock, funk and soul, and white and Black voices.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Want to Take You Higher and notice how the singers take turns on the lead vocal. Can you hear all seven band members shouting along in the background?
