There’s a Riot Goin’ On

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

There’s a Riot Goin’ On · After the success of Stand! and the Woodstock performance, Sly Stone did not deliver a new album for a long time. Meanwhile his drug use increased, tensions in the band grew and drummer Gregg Errico left in early 1971. Stone recorded most of it himself, in Sausalito and in his home studio in Bel Air, often alone, with overdubs and a primitive little drum machine.

The result sounds much darker than the cheerful records before it: sharp funk rhythms, a dense mix and lyrics full of apathy and disappointment about the sixties and about his own fame. The title was at first Africa Talks to You, but was changed in response to What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. Family Affair became a number one. The first reviews were mixed, but the album is now regarded as one of the most influential records ever, especially for funk, jazz-funk and hip hop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Family Affair and notice the shuffling drum machine rhythm and the languid, almost resigned vocals.
