Sleater-Kinney
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sleater-Kinney · The self-titled debut of the American band was released on 25 June 1995 on Chainsaw Records, an independent queercore label. The recordings were made by Nick Carrol in Melbourne in Australia, where drummer Lora Macfarlane came from. The producers were Tim Green and the band themselves, at the Red House in Olympia, Washington. Singer and guitarist Corin Tucker said that a thousand copies had been sold by March 1996. Only years later, in 2015, did Nielsen SoundScan put the figure for America at 25,000.
AllMusic described the music as a lo-fi blast of wired riot grrrl rock. Some songs, such as Be Yr Mama, are reminiscent of Sonic Youth, others, such as A Real Man, are pure punk rage. The reviewer found the melodic lines too monotonous, but praised the self-confidence and sense of dynamics, which promised much. Robert Christgau was more positive: in his view the songs about relationships between women revealed deep feelings, which could pass for passion. The reviews were favourable.
