Call the Doctor
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Call the Doctor was written in three weeks and recorded in four days, under producer John Goodmanson. It was released on 25 March 1996 on Chainsaw Records. Singer Corin Tucker drew inspiration from a bad job and from the way people in society are turned into products. There is no bassist: the band started with two guitars and liked the fact that the lines could move back and forth between them. Because Tucker and Carrie Brownstein had left their previous bands, the album is sometimes seen as the true debut. Drummer Lora Macfarlane had to leave shortly after the release, because her visa ran out.
The album received a great deal of praise. Robert Christgau lauded the raw energy and Tucker's huge voice. AllMusic called it pure punk. Spin wrote that the band tells stories of everyday struggle instead of the usual female rock tricks. In 2010 Rolling Stone placed it at number 49 among the best albums of the 1990s.
