The Scream

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Scream · Siouxsie and the Banshees received a great deal of press attention in 1977, but for a long time could not find a record contract. In June 1978 they signed with Polydor. Many of the songs had already been heard in two radio sessions for John Peel. Steve Lillywhite co-produced. The album was recorded in one week in August 1978 and mixed over three weeks at RAK Studios. Lillywhite had the drums recorded separately: first bass drum and snare, later the cymbals and toms.

The sound is angular and claustrophobic, with sharp guitar, a leading bass and mechanical drums full of toms. There is no real lead instrument: each band member has their own space. The guitars in Suburban Relapse echo the screeching violins from the film music of Psycho. Critics called it a milestone of post-punk. Joy Division and U2 named it as an influence.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Suburban Relapse and notice the guitars that sound like the screeching violins from Psycho. Where do you hear that tension?
