Relapse

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Relapse is Eminem's sixth studio album, released on 15 May 2009. It was his first album after a break caused by writer's block and an addiction to sleeping pills. After the death of his friend Proof he ran into trouble again. In 2008, after a rehab programme, he began recording again. Dr. Dre produced all the tracks except Beautiful, which Eminem made himself.

It is a horrorcore concept album about rehab and relapse, on which his alter ego Slim Shady returns. He plays a serial killer with a variety of accents, and short sketches feature Dominic West, among others. Crack a Bottle reached number one on the American Hot 100. Reviews were mixed, but the record won a Grammy for Best Rap Album and is now often rated more highly.

Listening tip. Listen to 3 A.M. and notice how the rapper presents himself as a serial killer and how the accents colour the story.
