Join Hands

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Join Hands is the second album by Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was released on 7 September 1979 on Polydor and reached number 13 on the British album chart. After half a year of writing, the group recorded it in May at AIR Studios in London. The subject is the First World War: Poppy Day opens with church bells and is based on the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. The sound is darker and more oppressive than on the debut The Scream.

The recording sessions were tense. Guitarist John McKay and drummer Kenny Morris withdrew and quit on the day of the release, a few hours before a concert in Aberdeen. The British press was full of praise. Playground Twist, about the cruelty of children, was the only single and reached the top 30. The album closes with The Lord's Prayer, recorded in a single take.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Poppy Day and notice the church bells it begins with and the long build-up to the tight, military beat of the drums.
