In Trance

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In Trance is the third studio album by Scorpions and was released on RCA Records in 1975. It is a break with the progressive rock of the two albums before it. The songs are shorter and tighter, and long suites such as Lonesome Crow and Fly to the Rainbow are missing altogether. This produced the hard rock sound with which the band would later find worldwide success. Drummer Rudy Lenners plays on it for the first time, and the album was the first collaboration with producer Dieter Dierks.

The look changed too: for the first time the band name appears in the lettering that returns on almost all later covers. The original cover was censored, and later editions were given a covered-up image. The white Stratocaster on the cover belonged to guitarist Uli Jon Roth, who used it on all the following albums. He names In Trance, together with Virgin Killer, as his favourite album by the band.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the guitars on In Trance and notice how tight this hard rock song sounds next to the long suites of the first albums.
