Virgin Killer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Virgin Killer is the fourth studio album by Scorpions and was released on RCA Records on 22 November 1976. It was the first album by the band to attract attention outside Europe. The title refers to the time of a killer of innocence. The title song came about when guitarist Uli Jon Roth spontaneously played a riff in the rehearsal room and improvised the words virgin killer over it, a joke about Paul Stanley of Kiss, with whom the band had just toured. Klaus Meine felt he had to do something with it, and Roth wrote lyrics around it.

Musically it was a further step from psychedelic music towards hard rock. In the United States it received little attention, while in Japan it became popular. AllMusic calls it the first of four studio albums that truly defined the band, with Pictured Life and the title song as highlights. The original cover caused an outcry and was replaced in some countries.
