Fly to the Rainbow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the tour for Lonesome Crow, as the support act for UFO, guitarist Michael Schenker was asked to join that band. His departure temporarily meant the end of Scorpions. Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine joined the band Dawn Road, and so a new line-up came about, with guitarist Uli Jon Roth, drummer Jürgen Rosenthal, keyboardist Achim Kirschning and bassist Francis Buchholz. That group recorded Fly to the Rainbow, which came out on RCA Records on 1 November 1974. Three songs were co-written by Michael Schenker, as part of the arrangement made when he left.

Roth plays lead and slide guitar and sings Drifting Sun, while Kirschning contributes organ, Mellotron and synthesizers. Speedy's Coming and the title song later appear on the 1978 live album Tokyo Tapes. Roth thought the cover downright ridiculous, and Metal Hammer put it on a list of the ugliest album covers.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Drifting Sun and notice who is singing: guitarist Uli Jon Roth takes the lead vocal himself here.
