Hold Me in Your Arms

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hold Me in Your Arms was released on 26 November 1988 on RCA and followed the successful debut. Half of the songs were written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. The other half consisted of his own compositions, produced by Phil Harding, Ian Curnow and Daize Washbourn. The release was delayed by several months by a fire at PWL Studios, in which part of the recorded music was lost.

The first single She Wants to Dance with Me was the first song that Rick Astley wrote himself. In the United States and Japan, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, a song by The Temptations, was also released. Critics responded in mixed ways. Music & Media saw the album as proof that he could also be a songwriter and co-producer, while AllMusic felt that, apart from the first single, it had few strong songs. It proved to be the last collaboration with the team: Astley wanted to leave the dance-oriented pop sound behind.

Listening tip. Listen to She Wants to Dance with Me and bear in mind that this was his first self-written single. Notice how danceable and direct the song sounds.
