The King of Limbs
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The King of Limbs · After In Rainbows in 2007, Radiohead looked for less conventional song structures and recording methods. From May 2009 to January 2011 the band worked on the album with producer Nigel Godrich, including three weeks at Drew Barrymore's house in Los Angeles. An experiment with turntables and software instead of conventional instruments ended up lasting six months. Much of the material arose from looping and manipulating the band's playing. Thom Yorke wrote melodies and lyrics over it. The title refers to an ancient oak in Savernake Forest.
The sound is rhythmic and electronic, with a great deal of sampling, looping and natural sounds. The album was released on 18 February 2011 as a download, with no singles. For Lotus Flower, however, the band did make a video in which Yorke dances. It divided listeners because of its unusual production and its short running time, but Rolling Stone and NME counted it among the best records of the year.
