A Moon Shaped Pool

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Moon Shaped Pool · In September 2014 Radiohead began work on this ninth album with producer Nigel Godrich, at their own studio in Oxfordshire. There was hardly a demo and no rehearsal period; the sound emerged during recording. Three weeks at the La Fabrique studio in France followed later. Godrich recorded on analogue tape, inspired by Motown and early David Bowie records. Jonny Greenwood wrote the strings and the choir, played by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Some tracks were years old: True Love Waits was first played back in 1995.

In Burn the Witch the strings play their instruments with plectrums instead of bows, which gives a percussive effect. For Daydreaming the band slowed the tape for the intro and the cellists detuned their cellos, for a growling sound. Many critics heard in the lyrics a response to the break-up of Thom Yorke and his wife. The album appeared on many year-end lists and received a Mercury Prize nomination.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Burn the Witch and notice the strings: they sound sharp and rhythmic because the players use plectrums.
