Dirty Mind

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Dirty Mind by Prince was released on 8 October 1980 on Warner Bros. He recorded the album in May and June in an improvised sixteen-track studio in the basement of his home on Lake Minnetonka. He played almost all the instruments himself and worked as engineer under the pseudonym Jamie Starr. Some of the songs he wrote on tour, when he was playing for Rick James.

The sound is rawer than on his previous records, with funk, new wave, R&B and dance, and more rock rhythms. Even punk rock is heard in Sister. The title song runs on a metronomic disco rhythm. Uptown is about tolerance and When You Were Mine was later recorded by Cyndi Lauper. It is the only record of his without a slow jam. Critics see the album as influential for black pop of the 1980s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dirty Mind and notice the tight disco rhythm, the falsetto singing and the metallic keyboard melodies.
