Controversy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Controversy is Prince's fourth album, released on 14 October 1981 on Warner Bros. He wrote and produced everything himself, bar one track, and played most of the instruments. It is the first record on which he is strongly associated with the colour purple and the first with striking spelling in the titles.

The title song asks questions about his origins and sexuality and includes the Lord's Prayer as a vocal piece. Ronnie, Talk to Russia is a political appeal to President Reagan. Private Joy is light pop funk and Annie Christian mentions events such as the murders of children in Atlanta and the death of John Lennon. Jack U Off closes as an electronic rockabilly. Rolling Stone found the message refreshingly topical. In 1981 the record came in at number eight in the Pazz & Jop poll.
