XTRMNTR

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

XTRMNTR, an abbreviation of Exterminator without vowels, is Primal Scream's sixth studio album and was released on 31 January 2000 on Creation Records. It was the last full-length album on that label. Whereas earlier records had been more hedonistic, the band now took a political stance and attacked the government, the police and multinationals. Gary Mani Mounfield shared in the songwriting for the first time. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine helped with production and playing, and Bernard Sumner of New Order also contributed.

The sound is more aggressive than before, with raw electronic sounds that recall industrial. Accelerator became the last single on Creation. The press reacted very enthusiastically: Metacritic reached an average of 90, NME and Uncut placed the record at number 2 of 2000, and NME gave it the award for best album in 2001. In 2019 The Guardian placed it at number 65 of the best albums of this century.
