Vanishing Point

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Vanishing Point is Primal Scream's fifth studio album and was released on 7 July 1997 on Creation Records. The record is named after the 1971 film, and Kowalski is intended as an alternative soundtrack to it. Singer Bobby Gillespie called it a speed-freak road-movie record. Everything was written and recorded in two months using two portable eight-track studios in the rehearsal room in Chalk Farm, and mixed over another month. Much of it arose from live improvisation, over which sounds, loops and vocals were later layered. It was the first album with bassist Gary Mani Mounfield, formerly of the Stone Roses.

The music draws on dub, ambient, dance and krautrock, and on bands such as Motörhead, Can and the Stooges. In Motorhead, Gillespie sang the first verse through a Darth Vader mask. Augustus Pablo, Glen Matlock and the Memphis Horns played as guests. Critics saw the record as a return to form. It reached number 2 on the British chart.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Kowalski and think about how this track fits a film full of paranoia and speed, for which it was intended as an alternative soundtrack.
