Yield

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Yield is Pearl Jam's fifth studio album and was released on 3 February 1998. After a short tour for No Code, the group recorded it in 1997 in Seattle, again with producer Brendan O'Brien. It was more of a team effort than the previous albums: singer Eddie Vedder had made the final decisions on those, but now the others also brought almost complete songs. Bassist Jeff Ament wrote lyrics for the first time, including for Pilate and Low Light.

The sound is more direct and leans on the straightforward rock of the early days. According to Entertainment Weekly, the album switches between fiery garage rock and acoustic reflection. Given to Fly, the first single, resembles Led Zeppelin's Going to California, according to that reviewer. Do the Evolution grew out of the novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Yield entered at number two on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews. It was the last album with drummer Jack Irons.

Listening tip. Listen to Given to Fly and notice how the acoustic guitar carries the song. Can you hear why someone thought of Going to California?
