Binaural
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Binaural is Pearl Jam's sixth studio album and was released on 16 May 2000 on Epic Records. It was the first album with drummer Matt Cameron, and for the first time since the debut the group did not work with Brendan O'Brien. The producer was Tchad Blake, known for his binaural recording technique, using two microphones for a three-dimensional sound. You can hear that in, among others, the acoustic Of the Girl. The group wanted to try something new.
Making it was difficult. Eddie Vedder had writer's block, and guitarist Mike McCready went into rehab for his addiction to prescription pills. For Soon Forget, Vedder used a ukulele, because it was not a guitar. The writer's block also produced the hidden track Writer's Block, with the sound of a typewriter. Blake's mixes suited slow pieces such as Nothing as It Seems, and O'Brien remixed the heavier songs. The album entered at number two.
