No Code

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

No Code · After a turbulent tour for Vitalogy, with the well-known boycott of Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam went back into the studio with producer Brendan O'Brien. It was the first album with drummer Jack Irons. Recording took place in Chicago, New Orleans and Seattle. The sessions began with tension: bassist Jeff Ament felt excluded and at one point walked out. Irons was seen by the others as a positive influence. O'Brien called it a transitional record.

The album deliberately breaks with the stadium sound of Ten and opts for experimental ballads and raw garage rock. Off He Goes stands out for its subtle harmony, Who You Are for its Eastern influences and I'm Open for its spoken word. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, but disappointed many fans. Critics praised the variety and missed cohesion.

Listening

Listening tip. In Who You Are, listen to Jack Irons's tribal drum sound.
