Loveless

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Loveless took My Bloody Valentine almost three years. The recording ran from February 1989 to September 1991 and took place in nineteen different studios. Kevin Shields led the sessions and experimented with glide guitar, unusual tunings, sampling and meticulous studio technique. Creation Records had thought that the album would be finished in five days. The press spoke of costs of £250,000, a figure that Shields disputes.

The music is called shoegaze, noise pop and dream pop. Most of it was written and played by Shields. With the tremolo arm he bent the strings slightly out of tune, so that the guitars sound like many layers, while according to him there are fewer guitar tracks than on most demos. The album reached number 24 in the British chart and was praised, but Creation dropped the band afterwards. It is regarded as a milestone of shoegaze and influenced many later artists.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to i only said and notice the guitar, which sounds as if a wah-wah pedal is being used, although Shields created that effect with an equaliser during recording.
