Isn’t Anything
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Isn’t Anything · Isn't Anything is the debut album of My Bloody Valentine and was released on 21 November 1988 on Creation Records. After singer Dave Conway left and Bilinda Butcher took his place, Kevin Shields went back to the group's experimental roots. He explored the possibilities of the studio, first on the single You Made Me Realise. Label boss Alan McGee urged the band to concentrate on the stranger work, such as Soft as Snow. Most of it was recorded in two weeks in a studio in Wales, during which the members slept about two hours a night.
The sound has soft vocals and ingratiating melodies, heard as if through a curtain of hazy, distorted guitar noise. The result was an important example of shoegaze. Critics responded enthusiastically, and the record topped the British independent chart. One reviewer called the album the first full expression of this new sound.
