From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Things to Come From Those Now Gone · Things to Come from Those Now Gone is Muhal Richard Abrams's third album, released in 1975 on Delmark. He plays piano and performs seven of his own compositions with changing line-ups: Wallace McMillan, Edwin Daugherty, Richard Brown, Emanuel Cranshaw, Reggie Willis, Rufus Reid, Steve McCall and Wilbur Campbell. On one track Ella Jackson sings.
Critics heard a very varied whole. AllMusic speaks of a mixed bag with work ranging from strangely bad to stunningly beautiful. The Penguin Guide to Jazz sees in the record a powerful affirmation of the conviction that musical progress comes only by following the lessons of tradition. According to the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide, the album shows the AACM in the middle of the decade, with chamber ballads, hard bop, electronics, a mock opera and plenty of energy.
