Afrisong

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Afrisong is a solo piano album by Muhal Richard Abrams. He recorded the seven pieces on 9 September 1975 at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago. The album was released on India Navigation and on the Japanese label Trio/Whynot. All the compositions are his own.

AllMusic writes that stride, bebop, blues and free music flow effortlessly into one another here. The record also shows off his technical skill and his underrated piano playing, which often disappears into the background behind his work as an arranger, composer and bandleader. The Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide calls the album the best of his early solo work. It lasts about forty minutes, with The New People as the longest piece at just over ten minutes.

Listening tip. Listen to Blues For M. and notice which bluesy elements you can hear in the piano playing.
