Sightsong
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sightsong was released in 1976 on the Italian label Black Saint. It is a duo record by pianist Muhal Richard Abrams and bassist Malachi Favors, who also played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The whole recording thus consists of nothing but piano and bass.
The pieces last roughly five to six minutes. Two of them are dedicated to jazz musicians, Wilbur Ware and Johnny Griffin, and a third to the AACM. AllMusic called it one of Abrams's best recordings and the best opportunity to hear Favors outside his work with the Art Ensemble. The Penguin Guide spoke of an example of the radical yet traditional spirit that Abrams had done so much to promote.
